US President Donald Trump has cut off funding to the World Health Organization, accusing the UN body of mishandling the coronavirus crisis as governments grapple with how and when to get their struggling economies back to work. The deadly pandemic has already killed more than 125,000 people and infected nearly two million worldwide since it first emerged in China late last year.

The novel coronavirus has also upended the lives of billions of people as nations imposed lockdown measures to curb its spread, undoubtedly reducing the death toll, but also sending the global economy into a tailspin.

The U.S. State Department reported its first coronavirus fatality among the staff at its headquarters in Washington, bringing the total death toll in its global workforce due to the outbreak to five. "The individual passed over the weekend," William Walters, deputy chief medical officer for operations in the Bureau of Medical Services told reporters in a teleconference. "He was hospitalized for some time fighting the coronavirus and ultimately did succumb."

The Group of Seven nations consists of the United States, France, Britain, Italy, Canada, Japan and Germany, and all seven of them have been hit hard by the virus.
