NEW DELHI: Union minister and senior BJP member Nitin Gadkari on Thursday hailed the role of VD Savarkar as a nationalist who fought against child marriage and untouchability, but lamented how the Hindutva ideologue had been portrayed negatively which needed to be countered. While we failed to present him rightly, others continued portraying him wrongly. The basic tenets of Hinduism are being liberal and inclusive, which were two main ideals for Savarkar other than nationalism and social service, especially his work against child marriage and untouchability," Gadkari said at the valedictory function of the two-day conference to mark the 54th death anniversary of the Hindutva icon. Home minister Amit Shah, who was to be the chief guest for the occasion, could not make it due to official engagements but sent his message, saying Savarkar was a person with unmatched qualities and who had done immense social and literary work.
