Coronavirus: Tamil Nadu records 5 new cases and first death, total 23 COVID-19 patients in state
Five fresh coronavirus cases were reported from Tamil Nadu today. Four Indonesian nationals and their guide from Chennai, tested positive for COVID-19 infection, said C Vijayabaskar, Tamil Nadu health minister. With the new cases, the total number of COVID-19 patients in the state has climbed to 23.
The newly-tested positive patients were in quarantine since March 22 at the Salem Medical College, confirmed Tamil Nadu health minister.
Tamil Nadu also reported its first casualty of coronavirus today as a 54-year-old man died in Madurai today. So far, India has reported ten deaths due to coronavirus infection.
As of today, Tamil Nadu has screened a total of 2,09,276 passengers and 15,492 people were under follow up. As many as 211 people were admitted in various hospitals. Of 890 samples that were tested for coronavirus infection, 757 turned negative. A total of 110 reports are about to come, said C Vijayabaskar. One person has been recovered, according to the latest data release by Ministry of Family and Welfare.
Six new cases were reported from Chennai on Tuesday. Five of them had a history of travelling to foreign countries. Patients were admitted to hospitals and the treatment had started, said the state health minister.
Earlier, state health minister Vijayabaskar warned of strict action against those individuals who have recently returned from abroad and continue to go out instead of adopting self-quarantine measures.
In an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a nationwide lockdown from Tuesday evening. The restrictions will be enforced for 21 days. "There will be a total ban on venturing out of your homes," Mr Modi said in a televised address.
In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Tamil Nadu government asked to promote all students till Class 9. Tamil Nadu chief minister K. Palaniswami announced several welfare scheme to benefit the common man.
